Many are intimidated by chiropractic care.

In this article, we answer the question “Are chiropractors safe?”

Scientists and patients alike have been singing the praises of chiropractic care for decades. After all, this holistic practice involves no drugs, surgery, or adverse side effects and has helped millions of people experience lasting relief from their pain and discomfort.

Yet many are still wary of chiropractic adjustments. Is it normal for your joints to crack like that? Are chiropractors safe?

At Oviedo Chiropractic, we love to see Central Floridians taking their wellness seriously and asking these questions before pursuing a new form of healthcare.

But after nearly a decade in the industry, allow us to reassure you that chiropractic care is not only safe, but it is an effective way to relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

Are Chiropractors Safe?

Yes!

Chiropractic adjustments work by applying gentle, carefully controlled force to specific joints in order to move them into the correct position. When joints are misaligned, this can put pressure on the surrounding nerves and soft tissues, leading to pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and other forms of discomfort.

Unlike other forms of healthcare, chiropractic care is not invasive and doesn’t cause uncomfortable side effects. (And it’s a lot better than cracking your own back!)

Like any other doctor, chiropractors are licensed medical professionals. Before they can call themselves a Doctor of Chiropractic, chiropractors must complete eight years of education—including 4,000 hours of various chiropractic methods—and pass a board exam.

In the State of Florida, chiropractors must also receive 40 hours of continuing education every two years.

Are There Any Risks To Chiropractic Adjustments?

Compared with other forms of medical treatment, chiropractic care has a very low risk of serious side effects.

The most common complaint after chiropractic adjustments is muscle soreness. However, as your body grows accustomed to being in the correct position, this becomes more unlikely with every visit.

Like any healthcare practice, there are risks involved, but these risks are considerably lower with chiropractic care than traditional medicine.

As chiropractors, we are committed to the safety and comfort of our patients at every turn, and we maintain open communication to ensure that you get the biggest possible benefit.

Safer Chiropractic Measures

Despite the low risks and high effectiveness of chiropractic care, you may still have some misgivings about your first appointment.

Here are some steps you can take to feel more comfortable with your chiropractor.

First of all, take the time to find a reputable chiropractor who is qualified to treat the conditions that most concern you. Read reviews, ask friends and family for recommendations, and verify that they have an active chiropractic license before booking your appointment.

When you arrive at your appointment, feel free to discuss your concerns. Most medical professionals—chiropractors included—want to help their patients feel comfortable with their medical care. During your discussion, they can explain the process in full to put your mind at ease.

Finally, you can ask your chiropractor to use a gentler method of adjustment. Using an activator or drop table instead of traditional physical manipulation can be less intimidating.

Chiropractic Care vs. Traditional Medicine

The good news is that chiropractors are a safe and effective addition to your healthcare treatment.

The better news is that you don’t have to choose between the two!

Many chiropractors are used to working with physicians to find the treatment methods that work best for their patients. By integrating chiropractic care with traditional medicine, you can get the biggest benefit.

Furthermore, because chiropractic care doesn’t involve drugs or invasive surgery, it is very unlikely to interfere with other prescriptions or medical treatments you may receive.
