Sick of the spinning feeling?

Not only is it possible to see a chiropractor for vertigo, but it may be the most effective way to relieve your symptoms.

At some point or another, you’ve probably felt the strange sensation of vertigo. The room feels like it’s spinning and tilting, and you struggle to maintain your balance.

If so, you’ve likely had one all-consuming question: “How do I make it stop?

While vertigo can be a debilitating condition, the good news is that there is often an easy solution. Let’s take a closer look at the times when seeing a chiropractor for vertigo can help relieve your symptoms without resorting to drugs.

What Is Vertigo?

The term vertigo is often used as a synonym for feeling lightheaded or dizzy. What sets vertigo apart from mere dizziness is the distinct sensation of movement or spinning. You may feel as though you are moving (despite standing still) or you may feel as though the room is tilting or spinning around you.

There are two types of vertigo: peripheral and central.

Peripheral vertigo is the most common form of vertigo and is caused by a problem in the inner ear. Because your inner ear is central to maintaining your balance, a problem in the ear canal can cause you to lose your equilibrium.

Central vertigo, on the other hand, is caused by a problem in the central nervous system (i.e. the brain and spinal cord). Central vertigo tends to be less severe and longer lasting than vertigo caused by an ear problem.

What Causes Peripheral Vertigo?

There are many potential reasons for dizziness or vertigo, including infection and even side effects from medications. However, two of the most common reasons are Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and cervical vertigo.

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals (called otoconia) become loose and move into the semicircular canals that are responsible for sensing head movement. Moving your head or changing your position causes these crystals to trigger your vertigo.

Cervical vertigo (also called cervicogenic dizziness) is caused by a compressed or pinched nerve in the cervical spine (i.e. the neck vertebrae). Symptoms of cervical vertigo can also include neck pain, headache, and nausea or vomiting.

Can I See a Chiropractor For Vertigo?

Absolutely! Chiropractic care is especially effective for BPPV and cervical vertigo.

To treat BPPV, your chiropractor can perform the Epley maneuver to dislodge the crystals and return them to their proper place in the utricle. Once this maneuver has been completed successfully, your symptoms will disappear as quickly as they began.

For dizziness caused by a pinched nerve, a chiropractic adjustment can put the vertebrae back in alignment, relieving the pressure as well as your symptoms of vertigo. By treating your dizziness at the source, you get fast, effective relief without the uncomfortable side effects of other treatments.
