Chiropractor for Sciatica

Sciatica Pain Relief is Closer Than You Think

Sciatica can make everyday activities like sitting, driving, walking, or sleeping uncomfortable. Pain may feel sharp, shooting, or burning as it travels from the lower back into the glute, thigh, leg, or foot, sometimes with numbness, tingling, or weakness.

If you’re looking for sciatica treatment in Oviedo, the first step is understanding what may be irritating the nerve. Because sciatica can have different causes, treatment shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach.

At Oviedo Chiropractic, we identify what may be contributing to your symptoms and use a combination of medical exams and imaging to build a personalized care plan. The goal is to reduce irritation, improve movement, and help you get back to your normal activities more comfortably.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a pattern of pain that occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg, so symptoms can extend well beyond the area where the problem begins.

Depending on where and how the nerve is being affected, sciatica may cause lower back pain, a dull ache, sharp or shooting pain, burning, numbness, tingling, or weakness. These symptoms can travel into the glute, thigh, calf, foot, or toes and may become more noticeable with sitting, standing, bending, or walking.

Because different problems can place pressure on the sciatic nerve, the symptom pattern is only part of the picture. One common reason that pressure develops is a change in the discs or surrounding spinal structures, which can affect the nerve and cause symptoms to travel down the leg.

How Discs and Nerves Can Contribute to Sciatica

Sciatica happens when a nerve is irritated or compressed, but there are different reasons that pressure can develop. A common cause is a bulging or herniated disc. When a disc pushes into the space around a nerve, it can trigger pain and other symptoms that travel down the leg.

The joints in your lower back can also play a role. If they are not aligned properly, they can put added stress on nearby discs and nerves and contribute to irritation.

Some symptoms can be a stronger sign that a nerve is involved, including:

  • Burning or shooting pain into the glute, thigh, leg, or toes
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Pins and needles
  • Weakness in the leg or foot

How We Evaluate Sciatica

Before recommending treatment, we first need to understand what is causing your sciatic nerve symptoms.

That process starts with a detailed assessment to pinpoint the root cause of your pain. During your evaluation, we’ll discuss current symptoms as well as your medical history.

Your chiropractor will then perform orthopedic and neurological testing to look for signs of joint, disc, or nerve involvement. These findings help us narrow down where the irritation may be coming from and whether further imaging is needed.

When medically appropriate, we can take X-rays right in our Oviedo office. X-rays allow us to evaluate the structure of your spine and look for areas of compression that may be contributing to your symptoms. If you already have an MRI, we can review that as well to get a closer look at the discs and identify areas that may be affecting a nerve.

The goal of this evaluation is not just to confirm that you have sciatica—it’s to understand why you’re having it. From there, we can recommend the treatment that makes the most sense for your specific findings, whether that starts with chiropractic care or calls for additional options.

How We Treat Sciatica

Once we understand what may be causing your symptoms, we can build a treatment plan around your specific findings. No two patients are alike, which is why every treatment plan is customized to your specific needs. Our team works closely with you to develop a strategy that addresses both immediate discomfort and long-term prevention, ensuring you can live pain-free.

For many patients, care begins with chiropractic adjustments to improve joint motion and reduce irritation around the affected area.

Depending on what we find during your evaluation, we may also incorporate medical massage therapy, EMS therapy, flexion-distraction therapy, or rehabilitation exercises to address muscle tension, mobility, and movement control.

Spinal Decompression for Sciatica

When sciatica is connected to a compressed, bulging, or herniated disc, spinal decompression therapy may be added to your treatment plan. Your spinal discs behave a little like sponges: when they’re under too much pressure, they can become compressed and lose some of their ability to move fluid normally.

Decompression gently creates more space between the vertebrae, which can help reduce pressure around the affected nerve while supporting fluid movement within the disc.

Not every patient with sciatica needs decompression. Your chiropractor will look at your orthopedic and neurological testing along with X-rays or an existing MRI to determine whether disc compression appears to be contributing to your symptoms.

When decompression is appropriate, the treatment is targeted to the specific area identified during your evaluation rather than simply stretching the entire lower back. This allows us to address the area of compression while continuing to monitor how your symptoms respond.

Laser Therapy for Sciatica

When irritated nerves and surrounding tissues are contributing to sciatica symptoms, ReliefNow™ Laser Therapy may be used as part of your treatment plan. The treatment uses targeted light energy to support cellular activity and circulation in the affected area, helping create a better environment for the body’s natural healing process.

Laser therapy does not remove the pressure on a nerve itself, which is why it may be paired with treatments that address the underlying mechanics. For example, when disc compression is involved, your chiropractor may use laser therapy alongside spinal decompression to support the irritated tissues while decompression addresses pressure around the nerve.

As with other treatments, the recommendation depends on your exam findings and how your symptoms respond to care. Some patients may benefit from laser therapy as part of their plan, while others may not need it.

Care That Changes With Your Progress

Sciatica treatment should never be a matter of repeating the same therapy and hoping something changes. Throughout your care, your chiropractor will monitor your symptoms, listen to how you’re responding, and adjust your treatment plan based on your progress.

Our goal is to help you improve with conservative, drug-free care whenever it is appropriate. If your symptoms are responding well, we continue building on that progress. If they aren’t improving the way we expect, we take another look at what may be going on rather than simply continuing the same treatment.

Sometimes that means additional imaging or a referral to an orthopedic specialist, neurosurgeon, or another provider who can offer a different type of care. Making that recommendation when it is appropriate is part of treating you responsibly and making sure your care continues to move in the right direction.
