Are Chiropractors For Kids, Too?

“My kid can visit the chiropractor?!”

Yes! There are numerous benefits of chiropractors for kids.

Ahh, youth!

As an adult, there’s probably a lot about children that you envy: their energy, clear skin, and the fact that they have their whole life ahead of them.

Surely a chiropractic adjustment is the last thing a child needs, right?

Not necessarily.

Chiropractor visits are a growing trend that many parents swear by. But is chiropractic care the best choice for your child?

Chiropractors…For Kids?

When faced with the concept of spinal adjustments, parents tend to doubt whether they are really necessary. After all, children are still growing. Are chiropractors for kids effective (or safe)?

Believe it or not, many children can (and do!) benefit from regular chiropractic care.

Kid’s bones are very different from adult bones. Not only are they more flexible, they’re also growing, changing, and realigning. Combine this with their seemingly constant activity, and you have a recipe for misaligned joints.

Children are flexible and active, which makes them more vulnerable to joint misalignment.

Joint misalignments—also known as subluxations—don’t just affect the musculoskeletal system, they can also affect the nervous system. Compressed or “pinched” nerves can cause a variety of symptoms throughout the body.

Not only is it safe and effective, childhood is actually the best time to see a chiropractor, as children’s flexible bones make it easier to gain and keep proper alignment.

Benefits of Chiropractors for Kids

Children who receive chiropractic adjustments see marked improvement in a number of areas:

  • Sleep
  • Attitude, behavior, & focus
  • Immune function
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Bedwetting
  • Fussiness & colic
  • Acid reflux
  • Ear aches & infections
  • Breastfeeding
  • Torticollis
  • Gross motor skills

When Can They Start?

Chiropractors can see children almost as soon as they are born.

If this seems too early, consider how much a baby goes through during birth. After being held in a cramped position for two months, they are then forcibly pushed (or pulled) out. Even an uncomplicated pregnancy and birth can be enough to cause misalignments in a baby’s young bones.

Babies of any age can benefit from a visit to the chiropractor.

Case studies of infants as young as two weeks old have shown a significant improvement in such diagnoses as reflux and failure to thrive. Others have shown an improvement in mobility and gross motor skills.

By starting early, you can prevent much of the pain and discomfort that adults may feel after their first chiropractor visit. Keeping your child’s body in the right alignment gives them the best start for a healthy, happy life.

Will It Hurt?

A child’s adjustment is a little different from those you’re used to as an adult.

Because they are smaller and still growing, chiropractors for kids will use less force during the adjustment process and may even press down on certain areas instead of the typical bending or rotating motions.

For babies, the adjustment will consist almost entirely of light pressure (the same you might use to check a tomato for ripeness) at various pressure points.

No matter the age of your child, the adjustment should not hurt. If your child does cry, it is more likely due to their discomfort with a strange place, strange people, and strange sensations than because of any pain.

Should I Take My Kid To a Chiropractor?

By all means, yes!

If your child suffers from any of the ailments mentioned in this article, chiropractic care can help. In many cases, it may even prevent you from having to seek out medications or other serious treatments.
