When it comes to driving, safety and comfort are some of the most important factors to consider. One aspect of driving that goes unchecked is the distance between yourself and your steering wheel.

If you’re driving with poor posture regularly, no matter how long the drive, it may lead to long-term discomfort. Incorrect seat positioning may also lead to serious injuries if you’re involved in an accident.

Read on for more information about how to properly seat yourself in your vehicle to ensure a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Safety Considerations

The distance between you and the steering wheel is vital for your safety. Sitting too close to the steering wheel increases the likelihood of injuries and that is particularly true due to the airbag. Airbags deploy at an almost violent speed (for our safety), but being too close can result in severe injuries to the face, arms, and torso.

Conversely, sitting too far from your steering wheel inhibits your ability to control your vehicle safely and effectively.

Where is the perfect median? Is there one?

Comfort and Posture

Maintaining proper distance from the steering wheel may also affect your driving comfort and posture. Sitting too close leads to cramped legs and restricted motion while sitting too far causes an over-extension of the arms which can lead to discomfort in your shoulders and back.

While a chiropractor can help with your pain, it’s important to maintain an ergonomic posture while driving to avoid lower back and sciatica.

Finding the Right Distance

Adjusting Your Seat

Determining the right distance from the steering wheel for you starts with seat adjustment. Here are some things to consider:

  • Height: Adjust your seat height so that your hips are level with your knees. You don’t want your legs over extended or knees too bent up.
  • Distance: Use the buttons or levers to move the seat forward or backwards so that you can comfortably reach the pedals with a small bend in your knees. Your feet should rest flat on the floor without your legs being too constricted.
  • Backrest: Move the backrest to an angle that supports your entire back. You should be slightly reclined while maintaining the height and distance that is optimal.

If you have multiple drivers of the same car, look for one that has preset seat positions. That way you’re not manually adjusting the seat every time you get in the car.

Steering Wheel Position

Once you’ve gotten your seat to the proper position, it’s time to toggle the steering wheel. The steering wheel should be within comfortable distance and allow your hands to grip it at a 9 and 3 o’clock position. Here’s how to achieve that:

  • Distance: You don’t need a ruler to measure it exactly but the ideal distance between you and the steering wheel should be about 10 to 12 inches. This gets you far away enough from the potential airbag deployment while still ensuring your safety.
  • Angle: The steering wheel should be at an angle so that you can see all lights, speedometers, and indicators without straining your neck.
  • Grip: You hands should remain at 9 and 3 o’clock with your elbows slightly bent and not having to stretch. Elbows are most comfortable resting at 120 degrees otherwise you risk pinched nerves.

Safety

Keeping the proper distance from the steering wheel coupled with a proper seating position significantly reduces your risk of injuries while on the road. It also reduces the need for acute care (like emergent chiropractic adjustments) after improper distance or posture.

Improved Comfort and Reduced Pain

Proper distance and posture helps reduce common issues like lower back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain. It fosters better posture and reduces strain on muscles, joints, and ligaments.

It may seem counterproductive for a chiropractic office to give tips on how to reduce pain but that’s our job at Oviedo Chiropractic. We think everyone should be able to live pain free.

Better Driving Overall

When you’re seated properly you gain optimal control over the steering wheel, pedals, and other parts of the vehicle which increase response time and safety on the road. You will be able to react more quickly to hazards and reduce your pain and fatigue while driving.

Your Distance from the Steering Wheel Matters

Whether you’ve been driving improperly for years or just need a few quick fixes to tweak your habits, finding the right distance from the steering wheel is essential for safety and comfort. At Oviedo Chiropractic we understand that proper ergonomics at home, in the office, and in everyday life is incredibly important.

By following these guidelines, you will enhance your safety on the road, reduce the risk of injuries, and enjoy a more comfortable drive no matter the distance.

If you’re experiencing pain and you’re not sure why, give us a call at Oviedo Chiropractic. We’ll take a look and make adjustments as needed. We are also able to provide you with the tools you need for an optimal driving experience.
